DEVELOPMENT OF THE NATIONAL ROAD FINLAND The backbone of the National Road Finland is the road 5, which is the most important development passage for the areas of Eastern Finland in the north-south direction. It acts as a traffic route, economic zone and a co-operation network. It is also an important route for tourist and freight traffic across Finland - the region’s estimated income from tourism is about one fifth of the total tourist income in Finland. In addition, a significant part of Finland’s summer cottages and cabins and the most important ski centers are located along the road 5. The lively cities and municipalities on the National Road Finland are constantly developing their services in order to better serve the needs of their permanent residents and visitors. The National Road Finland is part of the European Union’s TEN development networks. The passage starts in Greece and continues across Central and Eastern Europe and along the Via Baltica through the Baltic countries all the way to Helsinki. From Helsinki, the passage continues across Eastern Finland up to the city of Sodankylä. The EU’s expansion towards Eastern Europe and the revival of the international trade will increase the mercantile and tourist traffic on the National Road Finland and on routes connected to it. The National Road Finland is a tourist and freight traffic road that employs thousands of people. It also stands for a versatile zone with traditional and new technologies and productions, where high competence, streamlined production and services associated with them flourish. Industrial and productive operations on the National Road Finland are wide and varied, which is also reflected in the so-called cluster grouping of the economic life in the area: stone, forest, wood, paper; information and electronics; foodstuff; well-being; metal; tourism and culture.
