MUSEUMS Among the most distinctive cultural attractions in the region are the Orthodox Church Museum of Finland and the Victor Barsokevitsch Photographic Centre in the city of Kuopio, the Riuttala Farmhouse Museum in Karttula (see photo above), the cradle of the 19th-century Finnish Pietist movement on Aholansaari Island in Nilsiä, and the Ironworks Community in Juankoski. KUOPIO: Fire Museum of the North Savo Rescue Service The museum depicts the history of fire-fighting in Kuopio from the early 20th century to the present day, displaying equipment from horse-drawn fire-fighting carts to modern rescue equipment. Snellman Home Museum Johan Vilhelm Snellman (1806-81), a Finnish philosopher and promoter of cultured society, lived and worked in Kuopio from 1843 to 1849. The museum depicts the family life and work of J.V. Snellman during his Kuopio years. Open 16 May-29 Aug Wed and Sat 10 am-5 pm. Closed on 20 June. The artefacts saved from Karelian monasteries left on Russian territory after WW II testify to the rich cultural heritage of the Orthodox Church. The museum is closed for the reform of the permanent exhibition. The new permanent exhibition will be opened to public in 2011. Services: Location. The conservation area surrounding the heritage farm can be freely explored on foot and there are also marked trails. Over 1 400 artefacts, domestic animals. The main building of Riuttala was completed in 1852. Open: 12 Jun-15 Aug 2010 Wed and Thur, Sat-Sun 12 am-5 pm. The log-built home of Paavo Ruotsalainen is part of the museum. There is a regular water-bus service to Aholansaari in the summer 1 June-1 Aug. Open to the public throughout the year Mon-Sun. The exhibits include a replica of a mammoth´s molar tooth, dating back 22 000 years, that was found in Nilsiä. The centre also displays the equipment of Finland´s oldest brush factory, a school from the 20th century, a traditional country pharmacy, a room from the 1940s, photos and traditional handicrafts.
